Congress’ Communist Party
-Dr T.H.Chowdary*
Congress - communist relationship is deep-rooted disclosed the Telangana Pradesh Committee Chief, Sri Mahesh Kumar Goud, on 10 July 2025, while reopening the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) Maqdoom Bhavan in Hyderabad, after its renovation. It was originally built in Feb 17, 1974. Sri Goud must be congratulated for boldly revealing the truth. There are about ten communist parties in India – Six of them in Telangana; all separated themselves from the CPI in 1965, first as CPM and later from the CPM.
2. The patron – saint of Communists / socialists in Congress was Jawaharlal Nehru himself. Nehru once told the American Ambassador that he is by accident of birth Hindu, by culture Muslim and by upbringing and outlook western. Gandhiji famously said: ”Nehru wants the Angrej (Englishmen) to go, but angreziat ( English culture ) to stay. I want angreziat to go; but angrez to stay”.
3. Nehru’s love of communism and communists originated in his two visits ( prior to Independence) to the Soviet Union ( USSR / Russia) in 1920s and 1930s. During Gandhiji life-time Nehru never eulogized Soviet Russia or communism or socialism. As Congress leader and as its President (several times before and after India’s independence) he patronized socialists (Jaya Prakash Narayan, Acharya Narendra Deva, Achyut Patwardhan) and took them into the Congress Working Committee. Communists joined the Congress Socialist Party (CSP) and through it, infiltrated into the Congress! Infiltration, subversion and ultimate control, through Popular Fronts in the standard technique of communists world-wide is communists operational technique
perfected by the Communist International ( COMMINTERN before June 1941 and later COMINFORM). During his Presidency of Congress, Nehru created an International Division headed by communists Z A Ahmad and K M Ashraf, who infiltrated into Congress through the Congress Socialist Party .
4. Nehru desisted from openly professing and propagating socialism or friendship with communists as Congressman and leaders loyal to Gandhiji and Sardar Patel would thwart him from doing so. Nehru several times thought of and even threatened to resign from Congress leadership but never actually resigned lest he should become a non-entity. He was a creeper on tree called Gandhiji .
5. The Congress as a party was guided by Gandhiji and controlled by Sardar Patel ( and his associates like Rajendra Prasad).
6. In 1942 the ban on communist party was lifted by the British as with communists’ father land, Soviet Russia invaded by Hitler’s Germany ( June 1941) the war characterized as one between two imperialisms was now declared as “Peoples Wars”.
7. All Congress leaders were in jails because of Quit India movement, the communists, with British support for their war effort. Communists even helped the government in apprehending the QUIT India agitators - Congressmen and socialists.
8. At the end of the 2nd world war in May 1945, Congressmen and leaders were released. On recommendation by a committee which included Jawaharlal Nehru, Communists were expelled from Congress for their anti-national activities.
9. Post-Independence, Stalin and so the CPI characterized Nehru government as a stooge of Anglo-American imperialism . Com P C Joshi who was soft with Nehru was replaced by Com B.T. Ranadive in Jan 1948. As directed by Stalin-led COMINFORM, the CPI took to armed war against the Indian state, intensely in Telangana and nascently in Bengal, Bombay , Andhra and Kerala. Strikes in railways and postal departments were instigated . Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Dy PM and Home Minister of India dealt with them severely through preventive detention and ruthless police actions. Nehru as PM was writing to Chief Ministers of Madras, West Bengal and Punjab not to detain too many communists, who were waging war against his government ( just like now the Congress leaders, egged by communists are asking Modi government to stop hunting PWGA soldiers through “operation Kagar” ) . Decimated by India’s special police forces communists under-Stalin’s advice to a secret delegation of communist leaders (Ajay Ghosh, Makineni Basava Punnaiah, Chandra Rajeswara Rao and S A Danga) in September 1951 laid down arms in Telangana ( and elsewhere) formed popular Democratic Front(s) and participated in the 1952 General Elections.
10. CPI’s support to and collaboration with Congress again surged during Nehru’s daughter, Indira Gandhi’s time. Indiraji split the Congress ( her father often merely threatened to resign but did not; whereas his-daughter Indira precipitately split the Congress) in 1969. CPI seized the opportunity; staged street demonstrations in support of her, over-awed the “old” Congress and facilitated the take over of Congress by their friend, Nehru’s daughter.
11. The CPI was so committed to Nehru’s Indira Congress that it was the only party that supported Indiraji’s Emergency rule from 1975-77. CPI’s tall leader Com. Mohan Kumar Mangalam joined Congress and became a powerful minister and helped Indira Congress government to mutilate the constitution. No wonder that the CPI and Congress are so intertwined.
12. The CPI was part of the government during 2004-14, directed by an Italian lady wedded to Nehru’s grandson. Here in Telangana, the CPI hungered for Congress’ biksha and was gifted one MLA’s and one MLC’s seat in the State legislature. None of the other communist parties i.e CPI, CPM, CP ( Maoist), CP (New Democracy), CP ( New Democracy -Mass-line…) are servile to Congress and look for crumbs from the Congress ! No wonder the present President of Telangana Congress happily recalls the long-lasting utility and association and services the CPI renders to Congress.
13. The Indo-Italian-led (owned) Congress wants to be known as the poor man’s socialistic party. And so patronises the CPI and throws some crumbs ( 1 MLA and 1 MLC seat in Telangana) to it serves that purpose. (942 words)
