Reviving the Muslim League

Dr T.H.Chowdary*

The Oweisi brothers  Asauddin and  Akbaruddin of  All India  Majlis Ittehadul Muslameen  (AIMIM)  are super -active to extend their organisation  which basically so far was centered in Hyderabad, to  all over  India.  One  has recently visited Karanataka, Maharashtra and is scheduled to  go to UP & Bihar.   In all these places   they  want to   extend their organisation. Ittehad’s  present agenda is   reservations for Muslims  in educational  institutions ( despite  the minorities having  the right to  establish educational institutions  of  their  choice without  any limit),   in government  services and in legislatures etc.   This was precisely the demand of the pre-partition Muslim League which the then foreign rulers   conceded.   From these  reservations   it will be a short step  to ask for separate  electorate, as  the pre-partition  Muslim League  demanded and obtained from   the British rulers.

2. In the 1946 general elections, the League’s agenda was to partition India and create  Pakistan as home -land for the  subcontinent’s Muslims; it harangued the  Muslim  electorate  to reject Congress’ nationalist Muslims and  elect only the  Leagues candidates. Over 98%  of the Muslim electorate rejected the Gandhi-Nehru-Azad backed Congress’s nationalist Muslims.  Thereafter,  to suppress the  resistance  to partition by the  Congress  and Hindu Maha Sabha,   the Muslim League resorted to rioting. Much of north  and east India was engulfed  in communal riots.   Frightened by the  violence unleashed by the  League the Congress  had to    agree for the partition  and the creation  of Pakistan.   In deceptive self-righteousness, the  Congress declared that it  accepted  partition but not its basis, namely the  two-nation theory that  Muslims are  not part of the  Indian  nation but are a separate nation by dint of  their  religion, Islam.

3. The Muslim residents of  remnant India  who voted and rioted  for creation of  Pakistan  did not  by and  large go to the  country of their  creation. Here they remained and thanks to Nehruvian secularism   they prospered.   With fast and  large breeding their proportion has gone up from  10% to  14.4%  and   their growth is  50% more than the average  for India.  Already, 92 districts have been identified by the  Nehruvian   secular  UPA  government as    Muslim districts.  Under Muslim (not Dalit) First programs of the  UPA government, Rs.1,80,000 crores  were  spent  for their  development (eventually as Muslim majority districts).

4. Very soon   the MIM  will  be asking for separate electorate, autonomy to those  districts as for Kashmir and finally, a federation of the Muslim districts of  India.  That would be  reversion to what we used to have namely, the  princely states,  600 of  them. Instead of princely states, we will be having over 90 Muslim states within remnant   India.

5. Nehruvian secular Congress is now a party  mostly of the  minorities and those sections  of Hindus whom the Muslims want to co-opt into their fold. That is how  the Leader of the   Opposition  in the  Rajya Sabha is a Muslim. The leader of the  Congress party in the Lok Sabha   is from that section which is   being wooed to join them.

6. If the Oweisis succeed (as they appear to be )   in welding  Muslims    as a vote bank, then the  pre-1947 Hindu -Muslim  tensions  and riots  will be re-enacted.   It is  essential  that  the Oweisis should be  taken seriously and since  their agenda is  and separatism divisiveness, legal means must be  found to  ban this organisation  just as SIMI was  banned.  Oweisis’ MIM is  the successor of the Razakarist MIM of Nizam’s Hyderabad which wanted  to create an independent,  sovereign Islamic  state in the  Deccan.  That desire is undying    among many Muslims and   as Dr Ambedkar observed,  the Pakistaniat  DNA seems   to have only hibernated   but not   completely  dead  with the creation of Pakistan .

7. The NDA government’s development agenda cannot remove this cancerous  Pakistaniat from the  body politic of the descendants of those  who fought   to  partition India and   create Pakistan .  What the PDP  Chief Minister of J&K   has said namely,  that among others,  Pakistan  facilitated the peaceful elections in  2014 in Kashmir and that  the remains  of Afzal Guru   should be returned to Kashmir  is evidence  of the   undying existence of the Pakistaniat DNA. Added to the Muslims’ divisiveness is now the militant Christian conversion enterprise.  They are raising the ante. While they can   denounce Hinduism, in various  ways,   they demand that Hindus  should not resist the missionaries’ and  evangelists mean and foul references  to Hinduism and their massive conversion efforts.

8. While development is alright it should not be like feeding  poisonous snakes  with  nourishing milk.  We should  be aware of  the disintegrating  and  destructive   sections among some  residents of India and take  decisive  measures to frustrate their   consolidation and  growth to irresistible size, as the  Muslim League in pre-Independence India. Till 1940, the Muslim League agitated for rights and protection to Muslims as a minority but since  march 1940, it declared that  Muslims are not a minority but a separate  nation, with a right to separate homeland  and  State, Pakistan .  The MIM is  taking to that trodden path of the League which led to  victory  because of the  militancy, stridency and rioting. The  Muslim League had no following  in the Punjab, Sind, NWFP and  even  Bengal  before 1940  But the  assertion that Muslims are a separate  nation and  that an Islamic state, Pakistan should be  carved out for them, Moslems in those provinces too, rallied round the League.  The  Oweisis ( of Telengana) seem to  rouse Muslims in other  states to rally under its  banner, to repeat the  success of pre-1947 Muslim League.  The Owesis’-owned AIMIM is Muslims’ Communal party bent upon promoting Muslims’ separateness from India’s nation-hood.  Truthfully secular Indian State should not allow self evidently sectarian ad  communal (Ittehad-ul-Muslameen) parties to operate in the  country   (950 words)
